Microsimulating Vehicle-to-Vehicle in PARAMICS

As for V2V or Vehicle-to-Vehicle modelling, I am coming up with this idea that V2V vehicles work as probe vehicle in such a way that they collect real time traffic information for either link or path travel time and whenever other V2V vehicles are in-range they can share traffic information and update their cost table. Do you think if it is doable through PARAMICS API or have you any better idea to do so? Best, Arash

How will Big Data change the transportation/traffic modeling industry?

Cell phones, toll transponders and GPS units are all being used to track our movements throughout the street network. Add the in situ traffic counters and data management centers set-up in most major cities, some of which combine vehicle volume data with weather, incident and major event based data. The result is a lot of transportation related data, some privately owned, some publicly owned, that can be used to help develop models. I am interested on your thoughts, how will all this data change our industry? Do you have any experience working with a new (non traditional) data set? Was it positive? Were there accuracy concerns? etc.

Traffic data on a basic motorway segment

Dear All, I'm doing my master thesis. It is about speed-flow-occupancy relationship modelling. The data i have for motorways in Muscat,Oman do not show any congestion on them.Now I am stuck... I'm in bad need for speed, flow &/or Occupancy data for a basic motorway segment.. I appreciate if anyone can assist me with such data, and I will be more than happy to share my data analysis methodology and findings with the data owner.

Complexity in traffic models - where is the boundary, the example of DTA

As previously discussed, Micro/Meso area wide dynamic traffic assignment models are best suited to tackle short term problems due to issues related to volume/capacity ratios. If, in the future, all the buildings blocks of such model (driving behaviour, assignment behaviour..) are perfectly known for each local environment... and assuming the cost of such models is acceptable, quick to build... and assuming we find convenient ways to present results... Could we still be in a position where such models are too complex to give the kind answer operational people expect? Traffic management people (road works) often operate without models, or using local optimisation tools (traffic signals for traffic control centres). Will they accept tools that might look like guess work when projects go off the ground a few months later? Economists can hide behind unforeseen events and the fullness of time to justify their predictive failures, but in the field of traffic operations, will this be acceptable? I have the feeling we are reaching a level of complexity where models actually belong to a different category (more qualitative than quantitative). Should we learn to vary the use of models based on the level of complexity? To go to the extreme, a model in sociology tends to look like a page of text, no numerical data, no predictive principle, no forecast, yet, still a useful piece of information. Do we need to learn to simply represent traffic dynamics in a graphic way and refrain from numerical outputs? I am increasingly convinced that a combination of statistical records (google traffic for now), local traffic model and a clever usage of graphic design could be more relevant to the target audience than a complex model.
